Race Against the Storm: FIA Alters Miami GP Start Time in Response to Threatening Weather

The start time of the 2026 F1 Miami Grand Prix has been changed due to thunderstorms.

The FIA has advanced the start time of the 2026 F1 Miami Grand Prix due to the threat of thunderstorms, moving it from 16:00 to 13:00 local time on May 3rd. This decision aims to beat the worst of the expected weather conditions.

The joint statement from FIA, F1, and Miami GP organizers highlights the priority of minimizing disruptions and ensuring safety for all involved in the Grand Prix. The track’s ability to dry quickly after heavy storms as seen in the 2025 Sprint may not apply this time due to the forecasted continuous deterioration.

Despite the rescheduling, the race remains under the ‘lightning rule,’ which mandates a 30-minute hold if lightning strikes within an eight-mile radius of the track, with resets for subsequent strikes. This caution aligns with safety protocols observed in NASCAR, IndyCar, and other US outdoor events.

The 2024 Sao Paulo GP setting a precedent with schedule adjustments underscores the adaptability of F1 in response to weather challenges, further emphasizing the importance of proactive planning in event management.
